Imperial War Museum Duxford

Lot 56

1937 Buick Series 46 Business Coupe

Estimated at £20,000 - £25,000

Lot details
Registration No: Un-Reg
Chassis No: 3744278
Mot Expiry: T.B.A.

The styling of the Buick Special Series 40 was modified by the legendry Harley Earl for 1937. Whereas the 1936 model had a single grille with vertical bars, the 1937 one had horizontal bars and a divider down the centre, painted to match the body. The wings were squared-off at the end and the roofline lowered by nearly two inches. Power came from an inline OHV straight-eight engine of 100 bhp, that was coupled to a three-speed gearbox. Braking was by drums all round. Options included a heater, defroster, dual side mounted tires, white side wall tires, and a grille guard.

The Burgundy over Black Business Coupe offered is one of only 11,368 manufactured in 1937 and sports coachwork by Fisher. It has spent most of its life in the USA and Canada, including a number of years on display in a Hotel Museum at Niagara Falls, before being sold to the Chairman of a major Canadian motor museum for his own collection. It was renovated some 35 years ago and regularly used on rallies in Canada prior to its purchase by the present owner; a long standing collector in Jersey, Channel Islands. Following a service and general tidy up, he has used the car for touring and rallying in Europe

Fitted with its original 4064 cc engine, the Coupe is apparently capable of maintaining high cruising speeds, and its powerful hydraulic brakes make it ideal for long distance touring or rallying (Buicks of this type have competed very successfully in recent Peking to Paris rallies). It is reportedly complete and original, and even the radio works. Recently registered in Jersey after passing a stringent Government technical test, the Buick now comes with a UK CE 386 VAT form allowing it to be registered in the United Kingdom.
