Lot details

Registration No: E44 CBU
Chassis No: WVWZZZ19ZJW556590
MOT: March 2026

  • Only three former keepers prior to entering the current family ownership in 2022
  • Treated to four fresh Uniroyal tyres approximately 400 miles ago
  • Fitted with a new timing belt, water pump and front struts plus a full service etc by the vendor
  • A highly original, well-cared for example

Launched at the September 1983 Frankfurt Motor Show alongside the rest of the Volkswagen Golf Mk2 range, the GTi variant improved upon its predecessor’s aerodynamics (0.34cd vs 0.42cd), torsional rigidity and brakes. Penned in-house by Herbert Schafer, the newcomer was longer, wider and more accommodating than before but still tipped the scales at a mere 1,020kg or so (unthinkable for a modern supermini). Powered by a fuel-injected 1781cc OHC four-cylinder engine allied to five-speed manual transmission, the GTi Mk2 was reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 8.3 seconds and 120mph. Great fun to drive and capable of cocking its inside rear wheel during hard cornering, the standard 8-valve model was joined by a 16-valve derivative from September 1986 onwards (the latter proving quicker but only when extended thanks to its peakier torque curve). Available in three- and five-door guises, the Golf was comprehensively facelifted for the 1988 model year via the adoption of a five-slat grille, deletion of the front quarterlights and revised side trims / wheelarch extensions. A part of 1980s’ pop culture, the iconic ‘hot hatch’ not only starred alongside Paula Hamilton in the David Bailey-directed TV advertisement ‘Changes’ which featured the memorable line ‘If only everything in life was as reliable as a Volkswagen’ but also became a target for thieves looking to imitate the Beastie Boys’ Mike D. who wore a VW badge necklace in the video for the group’s hit ‘(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)’. Although Volkswagen sold some 80,307 Golf GTi Mk2 hatchbacks in the UK between 1984 and 1992, less than ten percent are still registered with the DVLA. Indeed, the website howmanyleft.co.uk suggests that a mere 104 1988 Volkswagen Golf GTi cars are currently taxed for road use.

Finished in the handsome combination of Oak Green Metallic with Grey / multi-coloured stripe upholstery, chassis WVWZZZ19ZJW556590 was first registered as ‘LKS 545’ on April 18th 1988. Reported to have had just three former keepers (one of whom retained it for thirty odd years) before entering the current family ownership in 2022, the Volkswagen is warranted to have covered a modest 66,000 miles from new (c.1,800 miles per annum). Riding on period, Gold-centred OZ Racing alloy wheels, the Golf was shod with four new Uniroyal tyres approximately 400 miles ago. Further benefiting from a new cambelt, water pump, front suspension arm and front struts plus a full service, the five-seater passed its most recent MOT test on April 1st 2025 with ‘no advisories’. Increasingly collectible, this highly original GTi Mk2 is described by the seller thus: ‘This is a very genuine and well-maintained example, now reluctantly offered for sale from my private collection to make room for a recently acquired Jaguar E-Type. A fantastic opportunity to acquire a classic car that has been properly cared for and maintained, ready to be enjoyed by its next custodian’.
