Lot 46 - 1951 Armstrong Siddeley Lancaster

1951 Armstrong Siddeley Lancaster

Estimated at £3,500 - £4,500

Lot details
Registration No: OVT 772
Chassis No: C1810226
Mot Expiry: July 2006

The first British manufacturer to publicize plans for a clean-sheet post WW2 model range, news of the forthcoming Armstrong-Siddeley 16hp cars appeared in 'The Motor' magazine as early as 9th May 1945 (the day after VE day). Taking their names from aircraft made by the associated Hawker Siddeley Group, the all new Hurricane and Lancaster entered production in November 1945 and February 1946 respectively. Based around a cruciform-braced chassis equipped with independent torsion bar front suspension, a 'live' rear axle and Girling hydro-mechanical drum brakes, the pair were powered by a 1991cc, ohv straight-six cylinder engine mated to either manual or pre-selector transmissions. Although, well received by the contemporary motoring press, the two-door Hurricane drophead coupe and four-door Lancaster saloon (with its coachbuilt body by Mulliners of Birmingham) were deemed to have merely adequate performance. Keen to remedy this criticism, Armstrong-Siddeley introduced an enlarged 2309cc (18hp) powerplant in 1949. Rated at 75bhp and 108lbft of torque, it reputedly boosted top speeds to 80mph.
Finished in black with brown leather upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in sound (chassis), fair (paintwork), original (interior trim) or good (engine, electrical equipment, bodywork, wheels / tyres) condition. Though, he reports that its four-speed manual gearbox produces "noise in first gear". Accompanied by "documentation that shows extensive restoration work was carried out about fifteen years ago", 'OVT 772' has been in his ownership since 1992. Apparently "little used during that time", it is thought that out of the 3,597 Lancasters made "less than ten are roadworthy in the UK at present". Undeniably rare, this handsome Armstrong-Siddeley is offered for sale with "original buff logbook, handbook, service manual", MOT certificate valid until July 2006 and historic class (free) road tax until June 2006.
