  • Rare Riley 9 Lynx presented in the appealing green with red wheels and green matching interior
  • In current ownership as part of a small private collection for the last 7 years
  • Comes accompanied with impressive history folder, as well as a large number of spares

The Riley 9 was by far the most popular prewar model Riley ever produced, with nearly 30,000 examples finding homes in 10 years. The model was launched with a choice of saloon (Monaco) or Tourer bodies. The range rapidly expanded, before being completely refreshed in 1933 to form the basis of Riley's body range across all chassis. This comprised the Falcon, Kestrel, Lynx and of course the Monaco. Most subsequent '9' models were scaled down versions of the bodies available on other chassis. With aluminium panels stretched over a timber bodyframe, a well trimmed interior with leather upholstery, thick carpeting and plenty of Walnut veneer and a 9hp 4 cyl ohv engine capable of 65mph, the the Lynx was essentially a topless Kestrel, sharing the same 'sports' engines, and other features. It was initially launched at the same time as the Kestrel, and sold well. For the 1934 season, the original 2 door model was replaced with a 4-door model, which more closely resembled the large Lynx models. The 4-door 4-seater bodywork made it more practical than the many 2-seater sports that Riley built, while the cut aways in the front doors gave it a sporty look, resembling the Riley racing cars. The Lynx remained a top seller through 1934, perhaps selling 600 or more. However, 1935 was by comparison a very poor year with only a handful of cars identified, although this may have been caused by an early demise as many 9 models were discontinued for 1936.

Manufactured in 1934 and presented in the appealing green with red wheels and green matching interior, ‘AYT 97’ has been in current ownership as part of a small collection for the last 7 years. Subject to full photographically documented restoration between 1996 and 2001, the vehicle benefited from replacement side screens in 2013 as well as full rewiring, a replacement alternator and replacement carburettor in 2016. Included with the vehicle is an impressive history file, including a folder documenting the restoration, a continuation book, large collection of brochures and informative material, a large number of previous invoices and MOTs and even a printed spreadsheet of self-servicing. Also included in the V5 document and a number of spare parts including twin carburettor manifold, 4 wheel spinners, instrument panel, solex carburettor, gear selector forks, dynamo brushes, starter motor, half shafts, differential, timing chain casing and more. The vendor rates the condition of the paintwork as ‘Average to Good’, with the bodywork, engine, transmission and interior trim ‘Good’ and the electrical equipment ‘Very Good’.
