Introduced in the early 1970s, the Yamaha YCS5E 200 occupied an important transitional position in Yamaha’s two-stroke road range. Effectively a hybrid model, it combined elements of the outgoing CS-series with features that would soon define the RD range, offering improved performance while retaining a more traditional touring-oriented layout. Powered by a 200cc air-cooled two-stroke twin, the YCS5E delivered smooth, flexible performance and was well regarded for its refinement and reliability. Produced for a relatively short period, the model is now considered comparatively rare, representing Yamaha’s final evolution of the classic CS-line before the arrival of the more overtly sporting RD-series machines, and is increasingly appreciated by collectors for its balance of usability and period character.
This Yamaha YCS5E 200 (1972) is offered from a private collection being dispersed due to failing health and was acquired by the vendor as a fully restored and running motorcycle. Produced for a short period, the YCS5E is widely regarded as a transitional model, combining components from the earlier CS-series with elements that would later appear on the RD200, making it a comparatively scarce and interesting variant within Yamaha’s two-stroke range.
Cosmetically, the machine is described as presenting well, benefiting from an expensive paint finish. Mechanically, the motorcycle is noted as an easy starter, with ownership focused on addressing known issues. The front forks have reportedly been professionally rechromed by Brookes Suspension in Bradford, and missing seals in the autolube system were identified and replaced.
Following a period of storage resting on its side stand, the engine is now reported to run correctly on one cylinder only. In addition, the neutral wire is noted as requiring reconnection to the wiring harness. Therefore there will be some recommissioning to undertake with this machine.
Overall, the YCS5E is offered as a well-presented but mechanically incomplete example, requiring further recommissioning and mechanical attention before road use, and represents an opportunity to acquire a rarer Yamaha two-stroke model from the final evolution of the CS lineage.
