Bentley's Continental R, code-named ‘Nepal’ by the engineering department, was designed and built entirely at Crewe. It filled the space left by the Rolls-Royce Camargue, sharing with that model an eye-watering list price. When launched in 1991, the initial press release had the price as £160,000, only for that to be tweaked upwards to £175,000 soon afterwards, when the new VAT rate was announced in that year’s budget. The sleek shape benefitted from work in the wind tunnel; the windscreen was raked to lower the vehicle’s drag coefficient, enhancing fuel consumption, lowering wind noise and raising the model’s top speed. It is said that when the model was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, the assembled audience broke out into spontaneous applause, with the Geneva Show car being sold to the Sultan of Brunei on the spot! Riding on 16-inch wheels with low profile Avon tyres, the new Continental R was powered by the company’s revered 6,750cc V8 engine, now using a new four-speed GM automatic transmission. The 325bhp turbocharged power unit would offer a near-150mph top speed and somehow heave Bentley’s 2.4-ton bulk to 60mph in just over six seconds.
Elegant and yet also muscular, this superb Continental R appears in its original colour of Balmoral Green, trimmed in the complementary Parchment and Spruce, and remains in outstanding condition after just 65,000 miles. Sold new on September 1st, 1992, through Dutton-Forshaw of Preston, Lancashire, its original equipment included a windscreen shade band and burr walnut interior veneer. It was meticulously looked after from day one, being serviced six times by Dutton-Forshaw up to July, 1995 (28,431 miles). An additional service was performed in 1995 by main dealer S. P. Broughton & Co. of Cheltenham, followed by seven services by marque specialist Sebright Origin Ltd. between 1997 and 2004 (46,940 miles). Subsequent services were performed by Marlow Cars in 2008 and Thornley Kelham in 2015 (59,254 miles). Very recently, a full service was completed at 64,523 miles by Simon Ainsworth Engineering, which also involved the cleaning of the underside and application of underseal.
The Bentley has been MOTed annually since 2013 and is offered with the current certificate valid until March, 2026, and showing no advisories. In the present ownership since 2021, it is offered with the current V5C, the original book pack containing the owner’s manuals, the service record, the warranty and the sales directory, a long MOT history running back to 1996 and maintenance invoices going back to 2003.
