Launched at the 1950 Motor Show, Ford's Consul and Zephyr Six broke new ground for the Dagenham firm. Both models were of unitary construction and featured overhead-valve engines, three-speed synchromesh gearboxes and MacPherson strut independent front suspension. Together with the range-topping Zodiac, the Consul and Zephyr were totally redesigned for 1956, emerging in Series II guise larger than before and benefiting from engines of increased displacement, in the case of the Consul's four-cylinder unit, to 1.7 litres. Needless to say, these new engines were also more powerful, enabling overall gearing to be raised for more relaxed cruising, while the brakes were up-rated accordingly. The key-operated combined ignition/starter switch was a 'first' for a British car. Introduced in February 1959, a major facelift saw the MkII range emerge in 'Lowline' form, with a roof 1½" lower than before. There were also numerous detail styling changes both inside and out, prompting Ford's publicity department to declare 'Everything's New!'. The Deluxe model was added to the top of the range to include a leather interior, upgraded horn ring to the steering wheel, cigarette lighter and optional two-tone paint.
Chassis ‘210070’ was supplied new to the United Kingdom being first registered on the 2nd September 1959. A Deluxe specification model, it is finished in the attractive and epitomising period colour scheme of Pale Yellow paintwork with a Black roof, and the interior is finished in complementary Black trim. A low ownership example, the Consul has had just two owners for the past five decades, having been purchased by the previous owner in the mid to late 1970s. The gentleman is understood to have worked in aviation and very shortly after the purchase was supplied with a company car, keeping the mileage on the Consul minimal until ‘210070’ was taken off the road and stored in a dry barn in c.1982. Remaining there for the subsequent twenty-two years, the Ford was sold to the vendor in 2004 due to the ill health of the owner and was recovered from the garage and found to have just c.32,000 miles on the odometer.
Discovered to be in extremely solid condition, it was found that no welding was required to the bodywork before the Ford was fully repainted in its original hue. Mechanically recommissioned before returning to the road, the Consul has been well used by the vendor across the subsequent twenty years of ownership, with the odometer now showing a believed genuine 55,000 miles. More recently (in 2019) provided with an unleaded cylinder head, stainless steel exhaust system, new clutch, renewed brakes and a full service, with just c.60 miles covered since. A very stylish and iconic Rock 'n' Roll Consul/Zephyr/Zodiacs that boasts very good panel gaps, and nice period features such as Hunters lamp and twin-spot lamps.
