The Suzuki Motor Co. was established in 1909 by Michio Suzuki to produce machinery for the cotton industry. An initial diversification into four-wheeled transport was curtailed by the Second World War, but after that Japan had a need for cheap reliable transport so Suzuki, like many others around the world, began to produce clip-on engines for pushbikes. These were an immediate success and soon they were making complete motorcycles; by the early 1960s they were second only to Honda in numbers of two-wheelers manufactured.
Better known for their two strokes, Suzuki joined the four-stroke revolution in 1977 with the GS750, which was soon followed by sister models of 550, 850 and 1,000cc. The GS850 was renowned for its comfort and touring qualities and was highly praised by Cycle magazine in 1979: “Suzuki’s new GS850, by virtue of conspicuous merit displayed in all the standard categories of evaluation, easily earns the Cycle Seal of Approval—with laurel clusters, which is an award our jaded test riders bestow on a motorcycle they judge to be simply, totally and supremely nice.”
We are pleased to offer this lovely 1979 GS850, which the odometer suggests has covered just 29,500 miles from new. In a very pleasing and slightly mellowed condition, the vendor informs us that it runs well, but some recommissioning will be required before it can be used on the road. It is supplied with the current V5C.
