Although not a name known to many motorcyclists, Sachs is one of the oldest motorcycle manufacturers in the world, founded in 1886 by Carl Marschütz as Nuremberg Hercules-Werke. Based in Nuremberg, Germany the company at first built a reputation for producing high-quality bicycles, moving on to powered two-wheelers a few years later. Like many old names from the early days of motorcycling, the company has had a chequered history with the Marschütz family having to flee from Germany to USA in the early 1930s. Eventually they were taken over by the Fichtel & Sachs group, a maker of automotive parts, and produced two stroke engines that were used by many manufacturers in trails and motocross bikes in the 1970s and 80s. Hartmut Huhn, Technical Director of Sachs, led the development of new models in the late 1990s, including the Roadster 800, designed by TargetDesign famous for styling the Suzuki Katana with the frame drawn up by Egli, known for the "Egli-Vincent" motorcycle. With typical German attention to detail and build quality, the bike featured Grimeca brakes, Paioli upside down forks and a reliable Suzuki V-twin 800cc Intruder engine with shaft drive.
The 800 Roadster is a rare bike in the UK and this example is presented in an excellent and original condition, fitted with a Puig flyscreen and displaying a credible c.4,621km (2,700 miles) on its speedo. A combination of top quality European running gear and style together with a reliable Japanese engine, it offers the best of both worlds in a simple V-twin shaft-drive package. It has been recently serviced by the vendor, a motorcycle mechanic by trade who currently works in BSB, and it will be MOTd before the auction and supplied with an owner's manual and a current V5C.
