Pip Higham is a highly respected former motorcycle dealer, classic magazine columnist and record breaking drag racer who was inducted into the British Drag Racing Hall of Fame in 2017 after his exploits throughout his career. The background for all this success was Pip’s own business, the ‘Village Bike Shop’ in Manchester, where he provided a service for those who wished to go that little bit quicker than the rest. The quest for more performance saw him develope mainly Suzuki based specials, racing in the Streetbike class across Europe and ultimately America, becoming the first European into the ten second bracket and then the first rider ever into the nines. ‘The Deuce’, a VBS development producing 160 bhp using Pip’s own tuning parts, ran in the nine second bracket many times at terminal speeds up to 154 mph for the quarter mile. A lifelong motorcycle enthusiast Pip has also restored many bikes, especially Ducati singles, to a very high standard, sometimes incorporating subtle little modifications to improve performance.
This beautifully presented Ducati, being offered at no reserve, has been restored and subtly modified by Pip using his many years of experience. In his own words....'This bike doesn’t conform to the ‘total nut and bolt’ restoration ethic, as on most of my other bikes, but don’t hold that against it! It has all steel mudguards, toolboxes and a ‘zero ethanol’ fuel tank and has been totally rebuilt from stem to stern with paint by Pete Priest, but more as an everyday usable bike as opposed to a show special. As I couldn’t buy a touring seat I had to create one, which was interesting! The engine is originally a 250cc Daytona, however it benefits from a 350cc ‘solid rocker’ Mark three top end, I seem to recall this would give it a capacity in the region of 300cc with superior breathing ability, good for climbing the SS50 to the Passo Rolle! Again, a Dell Orto SSi 28 is fitted, properly sorted with a newly manufactured 2.5mm needle jet. It even has a grown up Silentium muffler! It has 12V electrics with LED indicators and a sensibly sized fuel tank, the bars are intended for touring, as are the footrests. My intention was that we would use it, possibly in the ‘Touring’ class at the Moto Giro, but guess what? Never did! The wheels are rebuilt with alloy rims, new spokes, tyres etc. The front end has a Grimeca double sided front brake controlled by a dual pull lever, both levers are ‘Matador’ style. There is a centre stand and a ‘kick out’ style side stand for convenience.' Not run since last year it will need the normal checks before use, supplied with a current V5C.
