The 1930-introduced Wraith was the final small-engined new model to be launched by Rolls-Royce before World War 2 aero engine work became more of a priority. The Wraith engine's capacity was the same as that employed for the 25/30, though with redesigned crankshaft and larger valves. The Wraith's coil and wishbone independent front suspension came from the big sister Phantom III.
The 8459 small-engined Rolls-Royces and 2350 20/25 and 25/30 derived Bentleys made between 1922 and 1939 did much to sustain the company through the Great Depression. Compared to the 2940 R-R Twentys, 3827 20/25s and 1201 12/50s produced, a total of just 491 Wraiths were made, all being very much built by hand.
We understand that the 1939-built Rolls-Royce Wraith with limousine bodywork crafted by Park Ward offered here was first owned by the Ministry of Defence. Having been safely based at Cricklewood during the war, the coachbuilt limo enjoyed a peacetime role by serving the British Ambassador at the Hague for a number of years. Since then, no details of subsequent owners have been discovered before the car passed into the ownership of the Staffordshire vendor.
We understand that both Park Ward bodywork is good, the black and ivory paintwork good too, the beige interior very good, the 4.3 6-cylinder engine good and the 4-speed gearbox and axle fair. The 46,000 miles displayed when entered is believed by the vendor to be the genuine total.
Please note: We have not had this vehicle running.
