Introduced in 1962, the MGB Roadster enjoyed an eighteen-year production run. With nicely balanced handling and a good turn of speed, it merited the old MG marketing slogan 'Safety Fast'. Based around a monocoque chassis featuring independent coil-sprung front suspension and a leaf-sprung 'live' rear axle, its 1798cc 'B' series four-cylinder engine was allied to a four-speed manual transmission. Capable of over 100mph, the provision of front disc brakes and rack-and-pinion steering greatly aided control.
We aren’t aware of a competition where the task is to spend the most amount of money possible on an MGB, however you’d certainly think that had been the brief with this car! Consigned to us from a deceased estate and believed to have covered a mere 47,000 miles from new, RTN 220M was taken off the road in 1993 and remained in dry storage until around 1998, when a major restoration (with an absolute disregard for cost) began... Starting with a new ‘Heritage’ body shell which was professionally painted in Midnight Blue, the impressive build included fitment of a reconditioned 1800cc standard engine (MG Beehive - Searles of Soham), new oil cooler, reconditioned gearbox (MGB Beehive), new clutch (complete assembly), new propeller shaft, water pump, reconditioned back axle and reconditioned carburettors. An all-new braking system was obtained (cylinders, pipework, discs, servo, drums, handbrake cable), whilst other expenditure included a new radiator, hoses and water valve for the heater, plus a Kenlowe electric cooling fan for those warmer days. Said to drive extremely well, attention was also given to the handling, with new coil springs, spring pans and bushes, new wheel bearings, new kingpins, new rear springs and new shock absorbers (front and rear). A new heater matrix, with new motor and hoses were also fitted allowing year-round motoring in even the coldest conditions. Riding on reconditioned 'Rostyle' wheels with radial tyres, RTN 220M also was treated to a reconditioned windscreen frame and glass, new window glasses (2), together with a complete new hood and frame. The interior is finished to a very high standard too and was lavished with reconditioned seats in grey leather / navy piping, new carpets, new half tonneau cover, new steering wheel and even a CD Player! A new petrol tank and sender unit, petrol pump and pipework, complete new wiring loom and new HT leads were also fitted at the same time.
Since rebuild, the car has covered around 7000 miles and has reputedly only ever been used in dry weather. Our vendor’s late father purchased the car from the respected TR Bitz of Cheshire in Summer 2020, with bills on file from them showing even more expenditure and refinement over subsequent years. Absolutely ready to use and enjoy and offered with a large paperwork file - this delightful MGB Roadster couldn’t be replicate for a fraction of our guide price!
