1928 was quite a year for motor mogul Walter Chrysler, for not only did he buy Dodge Bros for $170m, but he launched two new brands - Plymouth and DeSoto. Whilst the Plymouth was pitched at such mass-market rivals as Chevvy and Ford, DeSoto was aimed at a more up-market clientele despite sharing many components with Plymouth and being assembled in the same works. The name was chosen in memory of one Hernando de Soto, the 16th century explorer who discovered the Mississippi in 1541.
Offered in seven body styles, and priced from $845 for a roadster to $955 for the de luxe sedan, the DeSoto with sidevalve six and Lockheed hydraulic brakes became a best seller in its very first year on the boulevard. 81,605 1929 Model Year DeSotos were built and sold, beating Chrysler and Pontiac in their first years.
The entrant of this delightful 1929 roadster with additional accommodation provided courtesy of a fold-out dickey (or rumble seat) reckons that the 28,188 miles displayed when entered is likely to be the genuine total since new. He tells us that body and paintwork in yellow and black are good and the brown interior is in reasonable condition. The 3164cc 6-cylinder engine, 3-speed gearbox and electrics are reasonable too, he says, whilst the logbook dates back to 1957 and there are eight old MOT certificates going back to 1978.
