The BSA Rocket 3 and the doppelganger Triumph Trident were technically advanced, high-performance roadsters made by Triumph Engineering and BSA from 1968 to 1975, and sold under both the Triumph and BSA marques. Alongside the Honda CB750, and later the Kawasaki triples, it brought a new level of sophistication to street motorcycles, marking the beginning of the superbike era. It had a 58bhp, 740cc air-cooled OHV unit construction straight-three engine, with four gears and a conventional chassis and suspension. The engine had less vibration than the existing 360° twins. The Rocket 3/Trident was part of Triumph's plan to extend the model range beyond their 650cc parallel twins and was the last major motorcycle developed by Triumph at Meriden, West Midlands, created to meet the demands of the US market.
On offer is a 'declared manufactured' BSA A75R Rocket 3, that was despatched to BSA in Baltimore and registered there in 1971. Not much history is known about the BSA until it was repatriated back to the UK from the USA in 2017, where it was declared manufactured by BSA at the end of 1970. There is a dating certificate confirming that this is a matching numbers machine, as confirmed by the factory record books. Some restoration has been carried out on the BSA and would make for a good rider's machine once the usual checks have been carried out due to short-term storage. A current V5C, BSA Dating Certificate and sundry paperwork accompany the BSA.
