  • One of just three surviving 14/60 Foursome Coupés, believed to be the sole example on UK roads
  • Subject to a comprehensive restoration completed in 2019, with invoices exceeding £45,000
  • Fascinating pre-war history, including long-term ownership, museum display, and possible wartime use

The Triumph Dolomite 14/60 Foursome Coupé, introduced in the late 1930s, was a sophisticated British sports tourer that embodied the elegance and innovation of its era. Designed under the technical direction of Donald Healey, the Dolomite was Triumph’s bold response to the financial hardship of the early 1930s. It featured advanced engineering for its time, including an all-alloy overhead-valve engine with cross-flow cylinder head, a four-speed gearbox with synchromesh on the upper three ratios, and a cruciform-braced chassis that allowed for more spacious body designs.

Stylistically, the Dolomite stood out with its Art Deco-inspired ‘waterfall’ grille and distinctive “Winged Goddess” mascot, modelled after a famous dancer. Walter Belgrove, one of Britain’s leading automotive stylists, was responsible for its sleek and modern bodywork. Buyers could choose from several body styles, including four-door sports saloons and the Foursome drophead coupé. The 14/60 Foursome Coupé, bodied by Salmons & Sons, offered a versatile roof configuration and luxurious features such as hydraulic brakes, automatic chassis lubrication, and even an optional radio.

First registered on 5th June 1939 as ‘GR 6798’, this particular example is understood to be one of only three surviving Dolomite Foursome Coupés, and the only one believed to remain on UK roads, making it a rare and highly evocative piece of British motoring history. As one of the final cars manufactured prior to the outbreak of the Second World War, it holds particular historical significance. It is suspected that the car may have seen Royal Navy wartime service in its early life, owing to its original Battleship Grey finish with Navy Blue interior. In the ownership of Bernard and Archibald Newsome from the 1950s, the car remained garaged for a period following Archibald’s death before being acquired in the 1970s by John Wilkie. Wilkie retained the car for approximately 15 years and began a restoration, which was later completed under subsequent ownership. The car was later purchased by Prominent Irish collector Joe Boyd, during which time it formed part of a museum collection for a number of years. It was subsequently acquired by the current owner through H&H Classics’ National Motorcycle Museum auction on 2nd June 2017, at which point it was presented in white.
Following its purchase, it became clear that although cosmetically presentable, the car required a comprehensive mechanical overhaul due to its period of museum storage. Initially, the car was entrusted to LMC Motors, where the engine was rebored with oversized pistons. However, a decision was soon made to undertake a complete restoration. During a previous visit to the Classic Motor Show at the NEC, the owner had been particularly impressed by a recreation of a two-door pillarless coupé concept by Triumph, executed by Rob Greene of Gloria Coachworks. This, combined with their reputation as leading restorers of pre-war Triumphs, led to the decision to entrust the full restoration to Rob and his team. The interior was commissioned to Dave at Custom Trim Creations, whose previous work on the owner’s Triumph 2000 Roadster had demonstrated a standard that made him the natural choice. It was felt that the standard Salmons interior was overly utilitarian in comparison to the rest of the car, prompting extensive research into period Triumph designs. As a result, a more decorative door card design—derived from a four-door coupé—was adapted and incorporated, complementing the car’s overall Art Deco aesthetic.
After considerable deliberation, the chosen colour scheme became Quartz Blue, and over the course of two years the car was restored by Gloria Coachworks, with smaller elements undertaken by the owner and his friends. With invoices on file totalling in excess of £45,000, the restoration was completed in 2019. Over the past seven years, ‘GR 6798’ has been thoroughly enjoyed as part of the family, residing alongside a Jaguar XK140 Roadster. It has been a regular participant in local car shows and concours events, receiving numerous awards. Now offered for sale due to a change in circumstances, this Dolomite represents a rare opportunity to acquire an unusual and characterful pre-war Triumph. Reputedly one of just three surviving 14/60 Drophead Foursome Coupés known to the Pre-1940 Triumph Motor Club, it presents a compelling opportunity to acquire a rare, Art Deco-inspired example with significant history and restoration investment.
