The need to comply with forthcoming US safety legislation saw MG revise the design of its Midget sportscar for the final time in 1974. Entering showrooms that October, the resultant MkIV version (as it was unofficially known) was immediately recognisable courtesy of its impact-absorbing 'rubber bumpers'. Far better integrated than the similar contrivances found on other American market cars (think Mercedes-Benz W107 SL), the weight penalty they incurred was more than offset by the adoption of a new 1500cc engine. Sourced from the Triumph Spitfire together with an all-synchromesh gearbox, it gave the Midget a notable boost in performance. Capable of over 100mph and known for its tidy handling, the MkIV was well received by the press and public alike.

Built in October 1977 and delivered to Henlys Ltd of Chester, this particular example is offered in its original combination of Flamenco with black trim, Rostyle wheels and a matching hardtop. The story, as it goes, is that a personal friend of the vendor purchased the car a number of years ago from a gentleman in the RAF stationed in Anglesey. The vendor wanted to buy the car, but after a number of years, it was sold to the owner’s brother. He would enjoy the car for another c.10 years, before finally the vendor had the opportunity to buy the car in July 2013.

Having now enjoyed the car for 10 years himself with numerous journeys and events, this MG has seen little use over the last three years due to ill-health and is now offered for sale as a recommissioning project, having last run approximately one year ago. The vendor does note that the car has recently been kept outside and the windows were left open accidentally in the rain, so the carpet has got wet and will need drying out. Now showing just 66,401 miles on the odometer, accompanied with the vehicle is a history file containing the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate, a small collection of previous invoices and MOT certificates, as well as some MG literature and the V5C document which displays 9 former keepers.
