Eric Buell built his first motorcycle, the RW750 using the square four 750cc engine developed by Barton Engineering in North Wales. He then turned his attention to racing inspired road bikes using engines from Harley-Davidson. Always innovative and determined to follow his own path, he designed a chassis with the same dimensions as a 250 GP bike to house a tuned version of Harley's 1200cc motor with unique features such as a perimeter mounted front brake disc and the dual use of the swing arm as an oil tank. In 1993 Harley-Davidson purchased 49% of Buell and by 1998 had taken full control, using the brand to market more sports orientated bikes rather than their normal cruiser style models. The streetfighter style XB Lightning range has proved to be the most popular combining lightweight with a torquey big V-twin motor.
This rare in the UK XB12S Lightning has been owned and ridden by the vendor since 2007 and is displaying a credible c.12,500 on its speedo. Presented in mostly original trim, it is fitted with a Quill Evo 2 stainless exhaust to replace the standard mild steel one and a neat Tail Tidy to clean up the rear mudguard, although the original items are included in the sale. Run recently, it is being offered with a number of old MOTs and a current V5C.
