The MkII Capri was launched in 1974. It was an example of gentle evolution rather than revolution, via which Ford heeded the lessons imposed by the oil crisis and attempted to make their popular Coupe better suited to the needs of the time. The revised model was treated to a shorter bonnet, larger cabin, more modern facia and smaller steering wheel. Most significantly, the Capri now gained a hatchback rear door making the stowage area far more easily accessible and giving rise to a boot space of 630 litres. The 1600 XL was an update from the 1600 GT, featuring plush trim levels and the 1.6 Litre Crossflow engine. This drove through either a four-speed manual gearbox or C3 three-speed automatic.

Little is known of the early history of ‘JTW 600N’ other than that it was first registered on 1st May 1975, however, according to the old style V5 present with the documents, the previous owner, a Mr A H Sharpe of Mitcham, purchased the car in July 1975 and it is understood that it was only used by his elderly wife to drive the car to the shops and back once a week, accumulating just 20,000 miles on the odometer in their 19 years of ownership. The car was then purchased by our vendor, who immediately laid the car up in dry storage until this year. The vendor has simply cleaned the car and got it running again on a new old stock carburettor of original type. The vendor had hoped to use the car, but unfortunately due to poor health he has now decided to sell it.

On inspection, we were very pleased to find just how original this car appears to be. The original Sebring Red paint is patinated, but very pleasingly indeed. The bodywork is very straight, with only a small amount of welding repair appearing to be needed on the drivers' side sill. On lifting the bonnet, the engine is very pleasing to the eye in its original blue paint and the vendor has advised that the car starts and runs and moves under its own steam. The vendor has told us that he has done work to the brakes as well, so the car should stop well also. The original cloth interior is also in amazing condition for its age, testament to the car's low mileage. There is further recommissioning work to complete, however this should be a rewarding task and we anticipate it could be the basis for a very good rolling restoration.
