The Ferrari 456 was the first front-engined Ferrari for 20 years and offered true performance touring for four occupants. The 456 GT was announced in September, 1992, making its public show début in Paris the following month. This was a positive and brave move by the company, as the prestige sports car markets were in recession after all the speculation and hype of the late '80s. However, Ferrari committed to broadening their range and maintaining their position at the head of the list of the world's most desirable automobiles. The Pininfarina-styled aluminium bodywork made for a pleasing design, recalling and modernising the shape of the 365 GTB/4 ‘Daytona’ with its long bonnet and retractable headlight pods. Also inspired by the ‘Daytona’ was the design treatment of the rear of the cabin envelope and tail, resulting in a happy union of modernity and heritage. Electronically adjustable self-levelling suspension gave positive handling and a comfortable ride, while the 442bhp V12 made sure that performance had not been overlooked.
Just 1,951 Ferrari 456s were produced, but its successor, the 456M (for Modificata) was to be even rarer. Launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March, 1998, it featured aerodynamic improvements and a redesigned interior. The exterior was mildly restyled, larger front brakes were fitted and some revisions were made to the suspension geometry. Thus improved, it continued in production until 2003, when a total of 1,338 456Ms had been completed – 688 GTs with the six-speed manual and 650 GTAs with the four-speed automatic.
We are delighted to offer for sale one of just 139 456M GTAs originally built to RHD specification for the British market. With 11 keepers from new, its documented history can be traced back to 2006, when its MOT records begin. Its invoices run back to 2013, when it was owned by a Mr. Dellow of Sevenoaks, who invested considerably in maintenance over the years that followed. Our example was purchased by the vendor in 2022, and he very quickly embarked upon his own programme of maintenance and improvements. Over £23,000 has been spent in his ownership, of which £19,000 occurred within the last 18 months.
The vendor’s work began in October, 2022, when the rear shock absorbers were rebuilt, among other jobs, by the Calton Road Garage. In July, 2023, the Ferrari was presented to Severnside Refinishing for paint refurbishment around the bumpers, sills, mirrors and door handles, and around the same time Mobi Valeting Detailing was responsible for cleaning the interior and undertaking leather repairs. The more recent work was entrusted to Retroclassic Engineering, starting in May, 2024, with a general service including the renewal of the sparking plugs, cam belts, cam belt tensioners and springs, the air, oil and fuel filters, plus various gaskets. The air-conditioning was regassed, the valve clearances checked and the cam timing adjusted. Various electrical repairs took effect in December, 2024, and February, 2025, which involved partially rewiring the injector loom, replacing the gearbox solenoid and installing a new battery. Additional recent work has included reconditioning of the gearbox and cooling system, exhaust repairs and replacement of the water pump and torque converter. Now ready for a new owner to enjoy, this superb grand tourer is offered with the current V5C, many invoices and MOTs, an original 456M brochure, some Ferrari Owners’ Club literature and two editions of Ferrari, the FOC magazine.
