The Bentley S-Type was unveiled in April, 1955. A very different car from its predecessors, it was longer and wider and based on a much stiffer chassis. Though the traditional body-on-chassis construction facilitated the manufacture of special-bodied versions, most were delivered with the standard offering produced by Pressed Steel Ltd., featuring alloy doors, bonnet and boot lid.
Powered by the final iteration of the company's venerable 4.9-litre straight-six engine featuring revised cylinder-head porting, power was quoted at 178bhp. As standard, the unit drove through a four-speed automatic gearbox with steering column control. Suspension was independent at the front by wishbones and coil springs and employed a leaf-spring mounted live axle at the rear. Braking was by drums all round. A total of 3,107 examples were produced between 1955 and 1959.
We don’t suppose there are many people who can say that they own a ‘new’ Bentley S-Type, but this car is perhaps as close to a new one as it is possible to get. The bare chassis, B32CK, dates from 1956 and first ventured onto the road in April of that year with the Middlesex registration ‘YMU 888’. Its subsequent fate is not known, but it appears to have been taken off the road many years ago, prior to its acquisition by the Rolls-Royce and Bentley-focussed Alyth Collection, where it has resided for at least twenty years.
The chassis is now presented in restored condition, and is accompanied by two engines, one of which has been overhauled. The bodywork, however, is most extraordinary—the Standard Steel body shell is a new old-stock item, accompanied by matching front wings, doors, boot and bonnet. It is hardly necessary to state that to find a new old-stock body these days is next to impossible. While some parts still need to be restored, and one or two may need to be sourced, we believed the S-Type is substantially complete, and we look forward to welcoming bidders who are attracted by the novelty of what is essentially a build-your-own-Bentley project. A current V5C is supplied.
