Enrico Fumia of Pininfarina's low-slung wedge design with high 'kammtail' was reminiscent of his earlier Audi-based Pininfarina Quartz prototype of 1981. The striking lines of the new Grand Turismo Veloce (GTV) and Spiders, revealed at the Geneva Salon in 1995, earned countless prestigious design awards from most motoring quarters. Characteristically, the car features concealed headlamps, designed in conjunction with Carello, mounted beneath a clamshell bonnet with illumination port-holes. Build quality was notably a close match to its German rivals and the GTV/Spider helped considerably with rejuvenating Alfa Romeo's reputation for beautiful design and quality crafted sportscars. The year 2000, two-litre cars were fitted with an upgraded twin-cam engine with 153bhp.
Manufactured in 2000, ‘RD51 ZRO’ was first registered in the United Kingdom on the 1st September 2001, having intriguingly (being right-hand drive) spent the first year of its life residing in Germany. Finished in the highly appealing colour scheme of Verde Coventry (Green) metallic paintwork with a delightful Tan leather interior upholstery, matching carpeting, and a Black hood and leather dashboard, the Spider has the 2.0-litre Twin Spark 16v straight-four engine with the five-speed manual transmission. Benefiting from features including air-conditioning, electric roof, and CD radio, the Spider is offered now having covered a modest 84,000 miles from new and with just four former keepers. Both starting readily and running and driving well during the recent photography session, and the dashboard displayed no warning lights.
Maintained by marque specialists AlfaShop of Norwich since 2007, since 2020 there has been over £4,800 worth of maintenance and improvements by them including rear discs, pads and handbrake cable, cosmetic improvements, and most recently, a full service including cambelt change, water pump, balance belt, tensioners, and auxiliary belt in 2024 at 81,035 miles. A very well serviced example, there are twenty-one services documented across the stamped service book and invoices in the history file! Offered with the original book pack in the Alfa Romeo wallet, a large collection of invoices, a current V5C document, and a no advisory MOT certificate until April next year, the Spider is also temptingly offered without reserve.
