By the early 1960s, Vespa Douglas in Great Britain were focusing on importing Italian-built Vespas as opposed to continuing to manufacture them. The Vespa SS90 made between 1965 and 1971 is much sought after by collectors due to its extreme rarity as only around 5000 were produced, with most of these having been lost to the ravages of time and/or overly ambitious riders. The SS90 was specifically developed to be a sporting variant of the small-frame Vespa, and sported a dummy fuel tank, a centrally located spare wheel, a narrower and therefore more aerodynamic leg shield fairing and a pad on top of the dummy tank that riders could use to crouch low behind the headlight to reduce drag at higher speeds. The engine was also upgraded from the standard ‘90’, with a four-speed gearbox in place of a three-speed, a higher compression ratio, a larger 19mm carburettor and a modified exhaust.

This rare SS90 has been owned and maintained by Paul Melici, M.D. and founder of the famous scooter specialist P.M. Tuning. Understood to have been imported to the UK some time ago, it retains clear engine and frame numbers and has been subject to a full nut and bolt restoration to a very presentable standard, with no expense spared. The bodywork has been meticulously restored and the engine overhauled and is said to have covered only 10 test miles done since. Today, it presents as a rare opportunity to acquire an SS90 that could be used immediately to either ride or show. It will be supplied with a current V5C.
