TVR owes its beginnings to one Trevor Wilkinson who set up a small motor business, Trevcar Motors, in 1947 in his home town of Blackpool, and built and sold on a succession of specials. By 1954, his TVR (so named after initials taken from his Christian name, Trevor) Engineering started marketing kit cars employing GRP bodies. The first tubular backbone chassis appeared in 1955 and the first series production car, the Grantura, in 1958. The vital financial stability did not occur, though, until the Lilley family acquired the business in 1965.
For many years, most TVRs were bought in Purchase Tax avoiding kit form until the dreaded VAT was levied on everything and all cars were factory-assembled. Most were fitted with either the Triumph 2.5 straight six or, as with the 1980-manufactured and factory-built Taimar being auctioned here today, the 3-litre Ford V6 for which spares are in plentiful supply.
The vendor tells us that the car has been the subject of a body-off, chassis restoration some three to four years ago and that the engine has only done some 300 miles following a full rebuild with cylinder heads specially modified to consume unleaded petrol. New adjustable shock absorbers by Spax have been fitted and the road springs renewed. The history file includes all history from new, the original purchase invoice and all old MOTs. The owner says the body, paintwork, interior, engine and gearbox are all in very good condition.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
