This E-Type Jaguar was supplied new to the Daily Express newspaper and is understood to have been the company car of Express cartoonist JAK whose work gave pleasure to millions.
The 1970 E-type first bore the registration ‘JAK 449’ and was said to have been driven by Raymond Jackson, better known by his pen name of JAK. Renowned for his love of fast living and fast cars, with personalised number plates, his razor sharp wit and eye for the funny things in life made him one of the country’s best-known cartoonists.
JAK claimed he was the first one to break an unwritten rule not to lampoon the Royal Family – but it was said Prince Philip collected his originals. He died in 1997, aged 70.
The E-type, in Porsche Tangerine, has been cared for by its current owner for 45 years, says Ian Cunningham of H&H auctioneers. It is tipped to fetch up to £55,000 at the Imperial War Museum Duxford sale on May 26th. Viewing and bidding will be available at the venue as well as bidding online and by telephone. H&H Classics is delighted that after a year the sale at this venue is very much open and will be welcoming visitors.
The car has had just three owners from new and is uprated with 6.5-inch wire wheels, stainless steel exhaust, 1-2-3 dual point distributor.
This rare Porsche Tangerine right-hand drive E Type was manufactured on the 23rd of April 1970 and dispatched to dealers Henlys of London a few days later. It was first registered as 'JAK 449' to the Daily Express newspaper on the 20th of May.
The car was bought by the current vendor in 1976 from its second owner, by now wearing the registration plate 'BME 63H', the original personal plate being kept by the first owner.
Over the past 45 years, the car became part of the family, even being used for camping trips with a roof rack! Maintained by its enthusiast owner it was professionally resprayed in 1994 and has been subtly updated with XJ6 6.5-inch wire wheels, stainless steel exhaust, stainless steel brake/clutch master cylinder brackets, 1 2 3 dual point distributor, spin-on oil filter conversion, Spax adjustable shock absorbers and single point accessible rear brake bleeders.
In 2010 the engine was given an overhaul using a brand new from the box crankshaft, big end bearings, clutch, flywheel and uprated oil pump. It also has its chain followers and tensioners replaced.
