The sound and spectacle of 1960s Detroit will meet the grandeur of an English stately home on 10th September, when three American performance icons go under the hammer at H&H Classics’ inaugural Kelham Hall sale.
A 1970 Dodge Charger, a 1966 Pontiac LeMans Convertible and a 1966 Ford Mustang headline the transatlantic trio, each embodying a different strand of the famous muscle car era.
Imported into Britain in 2004 and comprehensively restored, the 1970 Dodge Charger 500 SE is powered by a tuned Mopar 440ci (7.2-litre) V8 with Edelbrock carburettor and MSG ignition. Finished to high-spec SE trim with comfort seats and period gadgetry, it carries a guide price of £40,000–£50,000.
More than just muscle, the Charger became a cultural symbol thanks to its on-screen appearances in Bullitt and The Dukes of Hazzard. Its long, low fastback design captured the spirit of late 1960s America and remains a lasting emblem of rebellion and raw performance.
Alongside it sits a 1966 Pontiac LeMans Convertible, which was restored and uprated in 2015 before being imported into Britain, it now features a rebuilt 455ci V8 and Turbo 400 automatic transmission. Having covered only 2,000 miles since its rebuild, it is also estimated between £40,000–£50,000.
The LeMans name holds special significance in American car culture. With its blend of style, performance and glamour, the LeMans Convertible also embodied the optimism of mid 1960s America, appealing to buyers who wanted speed with sophistication.
Finally, completing the trio is a 1966 Ford Mustang V8 Notchback, finished in Harley Davidson Orange Red candy paint. Uprated with a hand-built SVT 4.6-litre Romeo Niche Line engine and Tremec T5 gearbox, its front end has been re-engineered to house the new powerplant, with strengthening throughout the floorpan. With fewer than 1,000 miles covered since restoration, it is guided at £25,000–£30,000.
Launched at the 1964 New York World’s Fair, the Mustang was an instant hit. Backed by one of the biggest publicity campaigns in Ford’s history, it became a defining symbol of post-war American youth culture. Immortalised in song, cinema and television, it remains one of the most recognisable names in motoring history.
James McWilliam, sales manager at H&H Classics, commented: “To see a Charger, a LeMans and a Mustang side by side at a 19th century stately home like Kelham Hall is a wonderful juxtapose of cultures - Motor City muscle in an English country setting. Each car tells its own story of 1960s America, but together they really capture the sheer confidence and drama of that golden era.
“With collectors on both sides of the Atlantic drawn to these models, we are looking forward to some significant attention in the cars and some lively bidding on the sale day.”
