  • Historically significant Jaguar SS100 2½ Litre sells for £400,000
  • Exceptional classics remain in strong demand
  • Lots contested by bidders from four different continents

Over £2¼ million worth of classic, collector and performance cars were successfully hammered away at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford in the latest H&H Classics auction on Wednesday June 14th 2023.

The undeniable star of the auction was the magnificent RAC Rally-winning 1936 Jaguar SS100. With its captivating beauty, exhilarating performance and fascinating history, the car commanded its rightful spotlight and sparked fierce bidding competition.

The eventual winner, a British collector, saw off American and Australasian opposition to secure the iconic pre-war sportscar for a fantastic £400,000, solidifying its status as the crown jewel of the auction.

“Every classic has its own unique history, but to be trusted with the sale of a landmark vehicle like the RAC Rally-winning Jaguar, brings an extra level of responsibility,” comments Roy Hitchman, Sales Manager at H&H Classics. “It’s therefore incredibly pleasing that we successfully sold this car on behalf of the vendor and repaid his faith in our service.”

While the Jaguar SS100 claimed the headlines, it shared the stage with an impressive line-up of other exceptional vehicles. Among the highlights was a stunning but rebodied 1933 Lagonda M45 Tourer, selling for an impressive £109,125, while a striking Cassis Red  1986 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Supersport, one of just 34 RHD C16 specification examples, fetched a healthy  £92,250.

British classics were in strong demand throughout the sale and among those successfully finding new homes was a timeless, 1967 Jaguar E-Type 4.2 2+2 Coupe, selling for more than £26,000 over its lower estimate for a final price of £66,375. A lovely 1974 Lotus Elan +2, sold for more than 50 per cent over its lower estimate, reaching an impressive £24,188. Meanwhile a ‘no-reserve’ 1954 Lea-Francis ‘Tojeiro’ restoration project sold for a fantastic £37,125.

Modern classic and historic Fords also performed well with a 1986 Ford Escort RS Turbo selling for £41,625 and a 1914 Ford Model T Roadster fetching £12,375.

“Our latest Duxford sale was a fantastic event, filled with some marvellous cars, and we're very pleased with the results,” adds Hitchamn. “However, we have very little time to rest as we move straight onto the preparations for our motorcycle and Pavilion Gardens sales which take place next month, as well as the preparations for our 30th year celebrations in September which we are all eagerly anticipating.”
