Jaguar MkII leads stand out results at Buxton auction

29/05/2025

  • Almost 100 lots find new homes at latest H&H Classics auction
  • A stunning 1961 Jaguar MkII sails past its lower estimate by £36,500
  • The highest price on the day was for a 1953 Bentley R-Type ‘Le Mans’ Style Open Tourer by Paul Forty, fetching £150,000

A stunning 1961 Jaguar MkII 3.8 was among a number of noteworthy lots hammered away for significantly above their pre-sale estimates at H&H Classics’ ‘Peaks Sale’.

Entered from The Loch Lomond Collection and described as the ‘holy grail’ of MkII Jaguars, being a 3.8 litre, manual plus overdrive example, the exhaustively restored and uprated car sold for £76,500 against a guide price of £40,000-£50,000 when it went under the hammer at the Pavilion Gardens, Buxton auction on Wednesday 21st May.

It was among almost 100 lots finding new homes for a combined value of over £1.7 million, in the auction which achieved a healthy sales rate of more than 70 per cent.

Other cars proving that excellent examples with sensible guide prices continue to attract a great deal of interest included a 1953 Bentley R-Type ‘Le Mans’ Style Open Tourer by Paul Forty, from the same collection, which changed hands immediately post-sale for £150,000. It was the highest price achieved on the day, making £10,000 above its lower estimate.

Meanwhile, a patinated 1962 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL sold for £74,250, which was more than £14,000 above its lower estimate, no doubt helped by being a rare and right-hand drive example.

Additionally, a 1961 Chevrolet Corvette, which had benefitted from a comprehensive restoration, was successfully hammered away for £67,500, more than £12,000 above its lower estimate.

However, it wasn’t to be outdone by a 1966 Mercedes-Benz 250 SE Coupe, entered from The Loch Lomond Collection, which after a fierce bidding war in the sale room, sold for £47,250. This was also more than £12,000 over its lower estimate, with great pedigree and a fantastic history adding to its appeal.

James McWilliam, sales manager at H&H Classics, said: “We’re very pleased with the latest results and would like to thank everyone taking part in the auction. From those entrusting us with sale of their vehicle through to the winners and underbidders, it was a fantastic day for all involved.

“As the classic car season now moves into top gear, we’ll now be turning our attentions to our next sale at a brand-new venue, where we hope we will be once again joined by many fantastic enthusiasts and participants.”

The Peaks Sale also included impressive results for several no reserve models, including a ‘barn find’ 1969 Riley 1300 MkII, which was hammered away for £14,062, and a 1993 Range Rover Vogue 4.2 LSE, which fetched exactly the same amount.
