Bustling Buxton Saleroom
The Grade II-listed Octagon Theatre at the Pavilion Gardens, Buxton did not want for attendees on November 30th but despite a bustling saleroom it was absentee bidders who took top honours. The 1960
Mercedes-Benz 190SL which had been supplied new to Switzerland and restored during the 1990s drew the attention of Swiss and British collectors before eventually selling to Dubai for an above mid-estimate £112,700.
The Spanish / FASA-built 1973 Alpine Renault A110 had been subtly modified during the vendor’s twenty-year ownership. A lovely car, it has gone to join a marque collection with room bidders again losing out to the internet.
A German market car that had been much modified, the 1979 Ford Escort MKII RS2000 came with all the parts to restore it back to original specification. A real eyeful, the LHD ‘Fast Ford’ made £34,000.
A UK museum was delighted to acquire the Lotus Elite that Colin Chapman gifted to Mario Andretti in 1976 (the same season that the legendary American won his first Grand Prix) for £11,500. Off the road for many years, the wedge-shaped sportscar may have required work but was an inexpensive piece of motorsport memorabilia and will make a great exhibit.
Finally, what is thought to be the sole surviving 1923 Sizaire-Berwick 23/46 Doctor’s Coupe was bought by a member of the Sizaire family and will thus be going to a very good home! In need of restoration, the Anglo-French creation exuded faded grandeur.
