Impressive performance by homegrown classics at H&H’s first Millbrook weekend auction

  • H&H Classics holds its first weekend auction at the Millbrook Proving Ground on Sunday 10th May
  • British classics catch the eye of bidders and see some strong results, not least for a 1934 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental Sedanca Coupe which achieved the sale’s highest price
  • Other notable results achieved by a 1973 Jaguar E-Type V12 Roadster and a 1971 Lotus Elan Sprint FHC

H&H Classics has held its first ever weekend auction at a famous UK motoring venue and enjoyed particularly strong results for British classics.

The sale at the Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire was held on Sunday 10th May and saw almost 80 lots going under the hammer, with 67 per cent of all cars finding new homes and total sales of £1.2 million.

It was British classics that attracted many of the best results, perhaps fittingly given the auction was held at the iconic UK motoring venue.

Among them was a sought-after 1934 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental Sedanca Coupe, one of just 279 examples of its type, which found a new home for £156,375, the highest price achieved on the day and more than £6,000 above its lower estimate.

The car was a Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts’ Club award winner during previous ownership and was once owned by celebrated bandleader and violinist Bert Ambrose.

Additionally, a splendid 1973 Jaguar E-Type V12 Roadster, with less than 36,000 miles on the odometer but which had been off the road for several years, was hammered away for £43,312, more than £13,000 above its lower estimate.

In need of recommissioning, it clearly attracted the interest of enthusiasts looking for a wonderful and straightforward project, possibly in time for a summer of sporty open-top motoring.

Just two years older and a 1971 Lotus Elan Sprint FHC also caught the interest of bidders, fetching £25,312, more than £11,000 above its lower estimate.

The car had been in the same ownership since 1981 and was offered with a comprehensive history detailing a full restoration completed six years ago.

James McWilliam, sales manager at H&H Classics, said: “We were thrilled to hold our first ever weekend auction at the Millbrook Proving Ground and it was especially pleasing to see some notable results, not least for British classics.”

Other standout results included a vintage 1927 Lagonda Two-Litre Speed Model Tourer being hammered away for £35,438, more than £7,400 above its lower estimate. It is a wonderfully patinated example that was supplied with a large history file.

Meanwhile, a charming 1957 Jaguar XK150 3.4-Litre Drophead Coupé, was hammered away for £52,875, almost £8,000 above its lower estimate, and a 1948 Triumph 1800 Roadster, a multiple best in show winner, fetched £21,938, almost £6,000 above its lower estimate.

Two project cars also performed well on the day. A c.1932 Frazer Nash TT Replica Evocation with Two-Large AC Engine and a 1976 Aston Martin V8, were sold for £37,688 and £33,750 respectively, despite both requiring extensive works.
