Lot details Registration No: ANU 9B Chassis No: 9817 Mot Expiry: May 2010
Based on a design exercise by the Swedish-born Pelle Petterson whilst working at Frua, the Volvo P1800 sports car was officially unveiled at the January 1960 Brussels Salon. Not entering production for a year, the newcomer's sleek two-door monocoque bodyshell was equipped with independent front suspension, a coil-sprung 'live' rear axle and disc / drum brakes. Powered by a 1782cc OHV four-cylinder engine (complete with five-bearing crankshaft and twin SU carburettors) allied to a four-speed manual gearbox, the 2+2 seater was capable of over 100mph. Initially manufactured in the UK, P1800 assembly was transferred to Sweden in April 1963 due to increasing concerns over fluctuating build quality. Never a major contender in the racing world, a P1800 did, however, finish second in class at the 1967 Daytona 24-hour race. Although, for many the Volvo is best remembered as Roger Moore's steed in cult TV series 'The Saint' which ran from 1962 until 1969.
Finished in Pearl White with red leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "very good" condition with regard to its engine, electrical equipment, bodywork and paintwork. While, he rates the four-speed manual plus overdrive gearbox and interior trim as "excellent". Reportedly "an original UK-supplied right-hand drive car" that was "first registered on June 1st 1964", the Volvo is further understood to have been treated to an extensive restoration by its previous keeper who acquired 'ANU 9B' in 2003. Stripped back to bare metal, the bodyshell was repaired as necessary before being resprayed and having its glass refitted etc. Further benefiting from refurbished chromework and a retrimmed interior, the 2+2 seater boasts such desirable early features as 'cow horn' front bumpers and a 'jukebox' dashboard. Said to "drive very well", the P1800S apparently "needs nothing and is ready to enjoy" (though, we understand that the radio is currently inoperative). Riding on correct type steel wheels, this stylish Volvo is offered for sale with "an owner's manual, new / old style logbooks, sundry restoration photos" and MOT certificate valid until May 2010.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
