George Singer gained considerable experience of the embryo cycle industry at Coventry Machinists before establishing his own bicycle manufacturing business in 1875. The company then progressed through motorcycles to the launch of its first true car in 1905 - a four-wheeled machine produced under license from Lea Francis and powered by a flat-three engine. This model led to a whole range of vehicles fitted with proprietary engines; in particular, in-line two, three and four cylinder units from White & Poppe of Coventry. The company really came of age, however, with the 1912 launch of the Singer 10. Described by the press as 'the Rolls-Royce of cyclecars', the newcomer was powered by an 1100 cc 10 hp four cylinder unit of the company's own manufacture that, somewhat unusually for the period, drove through a rear-mounted gearbox. Singer moved into armaments during the first World War. This caused profits to soar to such an extent that, for the first time since entering the world of car manufacture, the company was in a pleasingly healthy financial state. It thus continued to expand after the cessation of hostilities, initially retaining the 10 hp engine as the basis for its range. The major difference was that the gearbox was now mounted in tandem with the engine.
The delightful little four seat (two plus dickie) Tourer now offered, is a 1924 model. It is powered by the aforementioned 10 hp engine mated to a three-speed manual gearbox. According to the vendor, it is 'one of only 13 Singer 10s still surviving' and is a 'well restored and cared for example'. It is finished in Blue over Black with a Red leather interior and is being sold complete with dating letter from Chrysler, an interesting history and invoices for recent work carried out. The vendor considers the bodywork to be in 'excellent condition', the paintwork to be 'excellent (recently re-done)', the engine to 'drive very well' and the transmission to be 'in good working order'. Apparently the trim was renewed as recently as 2007. A charming little vintage car that should surely have little trouble finding a new home.
