Lot details Registration No: LSU 929 Chassis No: 116800237 Mot Expiry: June 2010
Designed by Maurice Wilks in 1948, a Land-Rover rates highly on any list of the world's most significant vehicles, and the earlier - and therefore purer - the better. By 1958, when this example was made at the end of series 1 production, weak points had been ironed out to bring the car to a specification that would last for decades. A simple ladder frame chassis, steel bulkhead and simple square-formed aluminium panels created a strong workhorse for light industrial and countryside use alike. In 1954, 86-inch and 107-inch wheelbases were introduced, and by 1957, a 'high-speed' 2-litre diesel motor was added to the power options. This diesel engine necessitated Solihull lengthening the front part of the chassis, bringing the Landy to its 88-inch and 109-inch wheelbases which then ran until the introduction of coil springing in the mid 1980s.
This example was bought by the current owner in 2001 and underwent an extensive restoration, with refurbished bodywork, a new bulkhead, fresh wiring loom, repaired chassis and a full waxoyling. Series 1 details are present, with a notable brevity to the bodywork sides and differently radiused wheel arches compared to more ubiquitous and recent series Land-Rovers. Axles were overhauled - necessary as the early 10-spline design was a notable Land-Rover weak-point - and new parabolic road springs were installed, along with period-correct front and rear lamp units. This Landy was originally built as a Series 1 88 2-litre diesel, but was fitted with a petrol motor when bought by the vendor. It has been restored with a slightly later and larger Land Rover diesel engine (thought to displace 2.25 litres) for greater usability, and is said to "drive very well with none of the usual transmission whine". The utilitarian interior is finished in green vinyl to the seats, with black and green painted metal and silver aluminium giving the driver an authentic early Landy experience. The spare-wheel is mounted internally on the bulkhead separating front seats from rear compartment. Overall the vehicle is said to be in "good" condition, and the Bronze Green paintwork suits its rugged nature.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
