Lot details Registration No: TRB888F Chassis No: CTC78550 Mot Expiry: Nov 2008
Launched in 1961, the Michelotti styled TR4 was the first TR-series sports car to incorporate wind-up windows and through-flow ventilation. With independent coil sprung front suspension, a 'live' rear axle and disc / drum brakes; its chassis layout was similar to that of its TR3A predecessor. However, the adoption of rack and pinion steering and a four-inch wider track gave the later model notably better handling. Powered by a 2138cc, four-cylinder OHV engine developing some 104bhp and 128lbft of torque, the TR4 was reputedly capable of 110mph and 0-60mph in 10.5 seconds. Such performance was easily accessed thanks to the presence of synchromesh on each of the four speeds in its manual gearbox (another TR first). Updated in late 1964 as the TR4A, it gained a new grille, revised body-to-chassis mountings and most importantly of all independent rear suspension.
Finished in red with black leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "very good" condition with regard to its engine, four-speed manual plus overdrive gearbox, electrical equipment, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. Despatched by the factory to dealer Ernest W Hatfield Ltd of Sheffield on 27th October 1967, 'TRB 888F' was first registered in Derbyshire. Sporting the same livery it does today, the roadster was supplied new with a heater, overdrive and wire wheels. Entering the current ownership via Yorkshire Triumph during December 2003, the TR4A has since benefited from an extremely thorough restoration (details of which are recorded in the accompanying history file). Believed to have covered a mere 200 miles since work was completed, this stunning roadster is worthy of close inspection.
PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle now has a MOT certificate valid until November 2008.
