Since Brian and Peter Hampsheir built their one-off PRH1 sports-racer in 1961, their Elden marque has experienced mixed fortunes. During the 1970s, Elden became a prolific manufacturer of Formula Fords, building 121 PRH10s 1972-1974, though stopping in 1983. But after being adopted by Techpro in 1988, although no longer running their own team, Elden again became a racing car constructor of Hampsheir designed FF and F Renault single seaters plus an F2.
This 1971-dated Elden Formula Ford PRH8 is truly historic, not only being eligible for the popular Historic Formula Ford category, but also because this single seater was driven by the great American racing driver, Danny Sullivan - indeed, it was the racing car in which the onetime Formula One and Indy ace started his distinguished career.
Coming with FIA papers, which also reveal that it was also driven by a female F1 driver, the Mk8 more recently has been competing in the HSCC Legends Racing Championship for Pre-1972 FF cars and, say the vendors, has been freshly prepared and should therefore be ready for the 2005 season. Having been raced recently at Spa, Pau and Oulton Park in the Gold Cup meeting, seats belts and fire extinguisher have been freshly renewed.
The tubular steel space frame is rated by the entrants as being currently good and the GRP bodywork in white also good. The Ford 1.6-litre `Kent' motor fitted has proved to be reliable and is reportedly in good condition, the four-speed Mk9 gearbox also in excellent order, the electrical equipment renewed, and the wheels and tyres good.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
