Arguably as French as a Gauloise cigarette, the Velo-Solex is something of a 2-wheeled 2CV, being standard rural transport for the peasants in some parts of rural France. One step up from a motorised bicycle, the VS was powered by a 49cc single-cylinder 2-stroke engine mounted over the front wheel. Production started in postwar France in 1946, was taken over by moped giants Motobecane in 1974, and was later entrusted to the cheaper labour rates charged by Hungarians. Indeed, some Hungarian-built Velo-Solex machines were briefly exported to Britain in the mid-1990s.
These diminutive, though motorised means of transport have become increasingly rare outside their native France, however, especially on this side of the Channel. Even more unusual, therefore, is this particular example, which, dating from 1955 and therefore French-made, is described by the vendor as being in original condition. Included with the lot, too, is some literature about the Velo-Solex. No collection, or getaway retreat in Provence for that matter, can possibly be truly complete without one!
