The Enfield Cycle Company of Redditch in Worcestershire, better known as Royal Enfield, was a major player in the once great British motorcycle industry and leading supplier of bikes to the Services during WW2. The War Department became by far the largest consumer of Royal Enfields for army purposes, although both the RAF and Royal Navy, together with elements of Civil Defence, also became customers.
This pre-war Model B, a 250cc capacity side valve single-cylinder motorcycle originally produced in 1935, has been owned by the vendor since 1982. The documents file contains various bills amounting to some £4100 of expenditure detailing extensive work carried out. The frame was bead-blasted and re-enamelled as were front and rear mudguards and fuel tank, the colour scheme being in silver, green and black. Much re-chroming was done where necessary and both wheels rebuilt. Both the single-cylinder motor and gearbox were also fully rebuilt in 1992 by Alastair Laurie Motorcycles of Dumfries who also renewed much of the electrical equipment including dynamo armature and field coils. Included with the bike today is the original brown buff logbook.
