When Alfred P Sloan took over the General Motors Presidency in 1923, GM's slogan became `A Car for Every Purse', the aim of the Corporation being to cater for much more of the automobile buying market from the low price Chevrolet to the top of the range Cadillac. Sloan was keen to offer product that would fill the gap between the $525 Chevvy and the Oldsmobile, whose prices started at $975.
The new market gap-filler from General Motors was first built alongside the slow-selling Oakland employing spare Oakland factory, but soon the new Pontiac marque had its own plant in the Michigan town of Pontiac, which was named after a famous Indian Chief. By the end of the 1929 sales season, GM's Pontiac brand had become the fifth largest of America's then thirty-three car makers.
Offered here is a 1973-built Firebird Trans Am (named after the famous Trans Am Stock Car races), the left-hand drive pony car being turned out in red with white leather interior. Current condition of two-door bodyshell is said by the entrant to be good with both panels and paintwork described as excellent and trim good. The 7457cc capacity eight-cylinder engine, completely rebuilt, is reportedly in excellent order, and four-speed automatic transmission and electrical equipment are also good.
The 69,553 mileage displayed when entered for today's sale is believed by the vendor to be the genuine total for this classic American from new. Taxed and tested, and with fresh V8, this mighty Trans Am is ready to thunder.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
