Lot details Registration No: SOH878H Chassis No: X-AD2 405A Mot Expiry: June 2004
This BL Mini Clubman 1275 GT was registered in Birmingham 17 September 1969, being first used by BL Sales and Marketing for publicity and press road tests (December 1969 Hot Car). Transferred to MG, SOH 878H became the last works Mini to be prepared by Abingdon Competitions as a lightweight Group 6 racer for the 1970 86 Hours Marathon De La Route held on the Nurburgring long circuit.
Purchased afterwards by driver John Handley, it was then acquired by Ron and Liz Crellin, for whom it was turned into a rally car by Special Tuning at Abingdon. In 1971 alone, Liz Crellin drove the 'Amoco Mini', as it became known, on sixteen events, including Welsh, Scottish and RAC Internationals as well as MN rounds. As an historic, it won Bowood and Coronation Rallies in 1983, since when it has been frequently shown.
Abingdon Mini enthusiasts cannot fail to be impressed with the spec - bumperless Clubman bodyshell in Amoco livery with lightweight doors, roll-bar, Perspex windows, laminated screen, full width dash, works wiring, 4 extra lights, twin-trip, 1293cc motor with 544 cam, gas-flowed head on Webers, oil cooler and extra water rad, rare Tech Del sumpguard, lightened flywheel, comps clutch, close-ratio all-synchro box, 3.9:1 final drive, dry suspension, adjustable tie-rods, dual master cylinder, servo, 10ins and 12ins knock-on Minilites with provision for carrying 2 spares.
