Lot details Registration No: PDT 549 Chassis No: BN1/159523 Mot Expiry: Sept 2005
Sir Leonard Lord was so impressed when he first saw Donald Healey's brand new Austin Atlantic 2660cc four-cylinder engined sportscar at the 1952 London Motor Show that he did a deal with the Cornish rally driver, so that, before the end of the exhibition's run, the Healey 100 had been re-badged Austin-Healey 100 and Lord's newly-created British Motor Corporation would produce them. Actually, although the engines were built at Longbridge, the bodies, which were now largely made out of steel apart from alloy bonnet and boot panels, were manufactured by Jensen in West Bromwich, where some 100 cars per week were also assembled from the summer of 1953 until 1957 when production transferred to Abingdon.
This 1954-built 100/4 BN1 was in receipt of a major restoration prior to acquisition by the vendor who tells us that many invoices recording work carried out are included with the car's papers along with a British Motor Industry Heritage issued certificate confirming the sportscar's dating and manufacturing details. As with all the vehicle lots in the auction today, this paperwork may be inspected at our documents office at the Buxton sale venue.
The righthand drive two-seater's bodywork is currently described as being in A1 condition as is the white paintwork and red interior, while both 2.6-litre four-cylinder motor, three-speed manual gearbox and electrical equipment are reportedly in AI order too. The current MOT certificate is valid until September next year.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
