Lot details Registration No: SV 8481 Chassis No: 40473 Mot Expiry: May 2005
Brothers William and Frank Crossley made automobiles for London car dealers Charles Jarrott and William Letts from 1906 at their factory at Gorton in Manchester, where Crossleys were made until 1937.
This is one of only two Crossley short-wheelbase tourers known, this one also thought to have been used by the then Prince of Wales for the 1928 Royal Tour of South Africa. Much later, in 1956, the loyal subject completed the Durban-Port Elizabeth Rally, returning to England some ten years ago. Even more recently, it has been fully restored to what is claimed to be as new condition in all respects and is, we understand, as yet not fully run-in.
Modifications to the 3.2-litre 6-cylinder engine include a rebore with the compression ratio increased by domed aluminium pistons, a larger oil pump increasing the oil pressure, a crankshaft damper added, the wholly assembly balanced, triple SUs employed on new manifolds, an SU fuel pump pressurising the auto-vac and an ignition coil fitted with the magneto acting as a distributor. In addition, a tachometer has been fitted as well as brake and indicator lights. The manual gearbox has 4-forward gears and reverse.
A full restoration history is supplied with the car, which was registered and taxed in the UK in 2000. Current overall condition of his classic North Westerner, painted blue with grey leather, is described by the vendor as being concours throughout. Both MOT certificate and tax exempt disc are current until next May.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
