Mot Expiry: Nov 2010

An evolution of Porsche's successful 924 Carrera GTP (Grand Touring Prototype) racing program, the 944 was introduced at the 1981 Frankfurt Motor Show. Powered by an all-new 2479cc SOHC four-cylinder engine equipped with twin contra-rotating balancing shafts, the usage of a rear mounted transaxle to house its five-speed manual gearbox gave it near perfect 50:50 weight distribution. Lauded by the contemporary motoring press as one of the best handling cars of its generation, Autocar magazine found one capable of 137mph and 0-60mph in 7.4 seconds. Thoroughly revised in mid 1985, the model gained a redesigned 'oval dash' interior, various cast aluminium suspension components (front wishbones, rear semi-trailing arms), a larger sump capacity and an improved ventilation system. Though, its impressive output figures (163bhp and 151lbft) and ventilated disc brakes remained unchanged.

Finished in Guards Red with Black Pinstripe upholstery, this particular manual example is described by the vendor as "a garage queen without rust in the usual places". Boasting "a sports exhaust, Turbo-type anti-roll bars and Koni shock absorbers", the 944 is said to come with "a large A4 folder containing much history and bills from supplying dealer Dick Lovett (1986 - 1988), Porschecraft (April 1990 - December 1991) and Bob Watson Engineering (August 1992 - January 1998)". Reportedly "meticulously maintained" whilst in the care of its previous keeper (1998 - October 2008), the 2+2 is further understood to have had "recent new belts". Believed but not warranted to have covered some 165,000 miles from new but only 2,000 or so of those during the current ownership, the Porsche is summed-up by the seller as "perhaps one of the best available". While he also informs us that classic car insurance for the coupe has cost him £200. Riding on correct type `teledial' alloys, this striking 944 is offered for sale with the aforementioned paperwork and MOT certificate valid until November 2010.

All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
