Lot details Registration No: H9 LLG Chassis No: WDB1260342A547618 Mot Expiry: March 2009
Introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1979, the new W126 S-class was a quantifiable improvement over its W116 predecessor. Lauded by the contemporary motoring press as the 'best car in the world', it was not only lighter than its forebear but also offered an improved ride and sharper handling. Styled by Bruno Sacco, its sleek silhouette hid all round independent suspension, disc brakes, power assisted steering and a range of powerful all alloy V8 engines (later supplemented by more fuel efficient straight sixes). Still a staple part of many a diplomatic fleet, the W126 remains sought after to this day thanks to its impeccable build quality and timeless lines. One of the more prestigious variants, the 420 SE Saloon was fitted with a fuel-injected 4196cc SOHC V8 engine that developed some 231bhp and 240lbft of torque. Admirably refined, the model was reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 8.3 seconds and over 135mph.
Finished in black with cream leather upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "very good" (engine, automatic transmission, electrical equipment, chassis, wheels / tyres), "immaculate" (paintwork), "unmarked" (bodywork) or "superb" (interior trim) condition. Said to have covered 159,000 miles from new, 'H9 LLG' apparently received the last of its twenty-six services just 2,000 miles ago. Further understood to have had "one private keeper for the last seven years", the luxury saloon reportedly "drives as well as it looks". An imposing motor car, this attractively liveried Mercedes is offered for sale with "full service history", MOT certificate valid until March 2009 and road tax.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
