Replacement for the much-loved and still competitive MGA, the 1962-launched MGB took the concept a stage further by adding comfort and refinement to the excellent performance and handling characteristics that had made the MGA so popular. Of unitary construction unlike its predecessor, the MGB was powered by a 1798cc version of the B-series engine producing 95bhp, giving sprightly performance of 0-60mph in around 11.5 seconds and a top speed of over 100mph, especially when fitted with optional overdrive. Early development saw the introduction of a more robust five-bearing engine in September 1964 and a larger 12-gallon fuel tank in March 1965. The MGB went on to be one of the most successful sports cars ever with an 18-year production run and was particularly popular in the US market.
This attractive Roadster has reportedly been the subject of "a two-year restoration costing £16,000 with numerous new panels fitted". There is a complete new interior, in black leather with red piping, plus wooden dash and wood-rim steering wheel. Other new parts utilised during the refurbishment apparently included the following: "all new brakes, chromework, wire wheels, tubes and tyres, exhaust, radiator, oil cooler, heater matrix, clutch and petrol tank". While we are further informed that "the overdrive unit was serviced" and the overhauled engine, which is unleaded compatible, "still needs running in". The vendor concludes: "This MGB Roadster drives superbly and runs quietly, and is pretty much new in my eyes - amazing value at a fraction of the cost of the refurbishment".
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
