The Otto and Wilhelm Maisch 1926 founded Maico were perhaps best known for building highly successful motocross and enduro machines with sturdy 2-stroke motors. The German firm began making competition bikes, trials and road racing machines, in 1933. During hostilities, the company moved manufacturing to Pfaffingen where it contributed much to the Luftwaffe's war effort.
Postwar, Maico road bikes like the 2-cylinder 350cc and 400cc Maico Taifun proved to be extremely popular with commuter-weekend riders in the 1950s, whilst in the early 1970s, Borge Jansson won several Grand Prix riding a Maico 125cc racer. Latterly, the marque's dirt bikes became extremely successful in off-road competition, particularly in top motocross events, before eventually going out of business in 1987.
When new, the rare electric-start and rapid 1957 Letta scooter offered was out of the financial reach of most pockets. We understand from the entrant that the 247cc machine was in receipt of a full restoration approximately ten years ago when still in the hands of the original owner and has been little used since apparently.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
