On this side of the Atlantic, the celebrated Ford Model T, which arrived in component form in crates from Detroit via the Manchester Ship Canal, was assembled at Ford's first European car plant in a former tram factory on Manchester's Trafford Park industrial estate from 1914.
The most famous of all of Henry Ford's cars, the Model T, was introduced in the US in 1908. With 2.8-litre 20bhp 4-cylinder engine employing monobloc casting and detachable cylinder head, the most exclusive version of all, even in the first full year of T production in 1909 during which 10,660 were built, was the 2-seater coupes of which only 47 were produced. However, by 1923, the peak production year for Model T production, incredibly 1,817,891 Ts were made in one year - the model outselling the rival Chevvy by six to one. After 15,007,033 had been produced in US and Canada alone, the final Model T came off Ford's once ground breaking Highland Park production line in May 1927.
Built in 1925, the Model T with rare Doctor's Coupe bodywork being auctioned is need of some TLC, says the vendor. In his view, the car is very sound, only requiring some cosmetic work to paintwork and interior trim, which are rated by him as being poor and fair respectively, and straightforward recommissioning after four years of preservation in Museum-display conditions to put it back on the road. Both engine and transmission are believed to be good.
