Lot details Registration No: F944DKU Chassis No: WPO94ZKN402117 Mot Expiry: June 2007
An evolution of Porsche's successful 924 Carrera GTP (Grand Touring Prototype) racing program, the 944 was introduced at the 1981 Frankfurt Motor Show. Powered by an all-new 2479cc SOHC four-cylinder engine equipped with twin contra-rotating balancing shafts, the usage of a rear-mounted transaxle to house its five-speed manual gearbox gave the two-door near perfect 50:50 weight distribution. Lauded by the contemporary motoring press as among the best handling cars of its generation, Autocar magazine found one capable of 137mph and 0-60mph in 7.4 seconds. Thoroughly revised in mid 1985, the model gained a redesigned 'oval dash' interior, various cast aluminium suspension components (front wishbones, rear semi-trailing arms), a larger sump capacity and an improved ventilation system. Though, its impressive output figures (163bhp and 151lbft) and ventilated disc brakes remained unchanged. Launched in 1988, the Porsche 944 S2 boasted an enlarged 2990cc powerplant that was credited with 211bhp and 207lbft of torque. Available in coupe and cabriolet guises, the newcomer's startling performance (contemporary road tests spoke of 0-60mph in 6.2 seconds and 149mph) was kept in check by revised suspension, wider wheels and ABS brakes.
Finished in grey / gold metallic with blue leather / cloth upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "all good" (electrical equipment, wheels / tyres), "very good" (chassis, bodywork, paintwork) or "excellent" (2969cc engine, five-speed manual gearbox, interior trim) condition. Said to have had "three former keepers" and to have covered 96,524 miles from new, 'F944 DKU' is further understood to have been "kept in special dry storage for fifteen months". Riding on alloy wheels, it is offered for sale with history file, MOT certificate valid until June 7th 2007 and road tax until June 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
