Introduced in Spring 1922, the Durant Star Four (Model C) was intended to compete with the all-conquering Ford Model T. Based around a leaf-sprung ladder frame chassis equipped with Timken axles and rear wheel brakes, it was powered by a proprietary 2.2 litre Continental four-cylinder sidevalve engine allied to a separate three-speed manual gearbox. Available in a wide range of open, closed and commercial variants, just seven examples were made in 1922 before production entered full swing the following year. Updated during 1924 as the Model F, the Star Four was marketed as 'The Aristocrat of Low Priced Cars' - a slogan that its sleek styling and solid build quality did much to merit.
Finished in maroon over black with black leather-effect upholstery, this particular Model C is variously described by the vendor as being in "fair" (interior trim), "good" (electrical equipment, paintwork) or "very good" (engine, manual gearbox, chassis, bodywork, wheels / tyres) condition. Reported to have had a "full mechanical restoration including engine, clutch, flywheel, rear axle, leaf springs, steering box, track rods, radiator, fuel tank, suspension, brakes, starter, dynamo, distributor", it has also been upgraded with "an electric fuel pump" as well as "stop and indicator lights for safety". Said to "start first time and drive beautifully", it sports "new side curtains, tonneau and hood". Believed to be one of approximately six Durant cars currently resident in the UK, the 'E' prefix to its serial number indicates that it was originally manufactured in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Riding on elegant wooden artillery wheels, this rare Star Four is expected to possess a new MOT certificate by the time of sale (though, its present one does not expire until 24th April 2006).
