McDowell was a well respected supplier of chassis, fuel tanks and bodywork, which enabled dirt track enthusiasts to build their own racers around standard Ford Model A parts. We understand from the vendor that the McDowell on the block here was constructed around 1930 in America where it was used for loose-surface oval competition. Although no specific history exists from this period, its competition life since being imported from the US in 1983 by Tom Threlfall is well known. For the former President of the VSCC actively campaigned this car for a number of years, at one point holding the vintage record at the Wiscombe Park hillclimb for over 3-litre cars.
This would appear to be a particularly sophisticated version of a McDowell dirt track car, having dry sump lubrication, Winfield carbs and Dayton 18in diameter wire wheels shod with Dunlop racing tyres. The 3.2-litre Model A engine's power is greatly boosted by a Riley 8-port cylinder head, the 3-speed gearbox has close-ratios and the brakes are hydraulic.
We understand that this classic American single seater was in receipt of a thorough checkover and engine freshen up prior to competing at the Loton Park hillclimb at the end of September. The current condition of chassis and red painted bodywork is described as good, the engine recently overhauled and the transmission in good order. A McDowell would certainly be different for historic racing or hillclimbing.
