An evolution of Porsche's successful 924 Carrera GTP (Grand Touring Prototype) racing program, the 944 was introduced at the 1981 Frankfurt Motor Show. Powered by an all-new 2,479cc SOHC four-cylinder engine equipped with twin contra-rotating balancing shafts, the usage of a rear mounted transaxle to house its five-speed manual gearbox gave it near perfect 50:50 weight distribution. Lauded by the contemporary motoring press as one of the best handling cars of its generation, Autocar magazine found one capable of 137mph and 0-60mph in 7.4 seconds.
Finished in Guards Red with brown cloth upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as variously being in sound (chassis and bodywork), good (paintwork, electrical equipment and wheels / tyres) or very good (engine, 5-speed manual gearbox and interior trim) overall condition. Treated to a vehicle condition report and thorough service (including belts and tensioners) by specialist Hartech in November 2003 (some 2,400 miles ago), more recent work has reportedly included a cylinder head overhaul and refurbishment of the front brakes. Although, the invoice for the engine fettling has been misplaced, the current owner advises that the cylinder head bolts will need tightening down in approximately 500 miles. Benefiting from a fresh battery and Laserline immobiliser, this practical 2+2 sports coupe is offered for sale with sundry invoices and MOT certificate valid until 31st May 2006.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
