Lot details Registration No: PXY 980 Chassis No: RME23942 Mot Expiry: Jan 2007
An evolution of the Riley RMA sports saloon, the RME 1.5 litre was announced in late 1951. Built around the same fine-handling chassis as its predecessor, it benefited from the adoption of Girling hydraulic drum brakes, a hypoid-bevel back axle and enlarged rear windscreen. A handsome design capable of some 80mph, its traditional ash-framed bodywork and well-appointed interior placed it a cut above many rivals. Unfortunately, so did a purchase price which had risen to over £850 (excluding purchase tax) by the time production ceased in 1955. As a result, a mere 3,446 RMEs are thought to have been made.
Finished in green with beige upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "poor" (interior trim, paintwork), "good" (1496cc engine, four-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment, chassis, bodywork) or "very good" (tyres) condition. He further states that: "I have only been the owner of this car for a few months so information is limited. The clutch shows signs of slipping in extreme conditions (e.g. steep hills). The lift pump sometimes fails to 'kick in' so I generally start the car by priming it manually (under the bonnet). I have also added (admittedly ugly) indicators which can easily be removed (switch is on passenger side) but semaphores do work. This vehicle runs on leaded petrol. It was fitted with brand new tyres in January 2006 and a new battery. I have had the starter replaced and a new regulator cut-out installed. The roof requires attention and also the seats and headlining etc. The paintwork is poor. The car is mechanically and electrically sound and worthy of some more restoration work. The car drives well and has just completed by me a round trip in one day of approximately 270 miles". Riding on steel wheels, this 'rolling restoration' project is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until January 22nd 2007 and historic class (free) road tax until January 31st 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
